Learning Environment and Child's Vision: Seven Things to Check Before September
The school supplies are usually ready a few days before the first bell. We less frequently check the place where the child will spend the entire school year.

The good news is that most changes cost nothing. It only takes a quarter of an hour and a few decisions that can't be made in a furniture store, as they depend not on the furniture but on how it is positioned in the room.
What Actually Changes in September
For two months, the child's vision has been working differently. Ball, bike, water, horizon. The eye has been looking far away for most of the day, and the distance of focus has been changing constantly.
September reverses the proportions. Board, notebook, reading, screen. For several hours a day, the eye focuses on one close distance and maintains that setting. This is managed by accommodation — the eye's ability to change focus, operating without our conscious control. The longer the work at one distance lasts, the more fatigue appears. It’s not about avoiding this, as it’s impossible. It’s about ensuring the eye also gets the other side: distance, movement, change.
Setting up the learning environment is the first thing we can realistically influence.
1. Start with the Feet, Not the Desk
The most common mistake when arranging a study corner is choosing a desk for the room, not for the child.
The reference point is not centimeters, but the body. Feet should be flat on the floor, and elbows should rest comfortably on the desk — the angle at the elbow around ninety degrees. If the legs dangle and the shoulders rise, the desk is too high.
You don’t have to buy a new one right away. A footrest, a thick book, or a box under the feet solves the issue, and with a child who grows quickly, it’s a temporary solution anyway. A desk that is too high forces the shoulders up and tires the neck faster — and tension in the neck and digital eye strain often go hand in hand.
2. Screen Within Reach, Book Closer
Two different tasks for the eye, so two different distances.
The screen should be about an arm's length away from the eyes. You don’t need to measure it — just have the child stretch out their arm and check if they can reach it.
The book and notebook are closer, but not so close that the child sometimes brings them in. A good reference point is the length of the forearm, from elbow to fingers. If the child consistently brings the text closer, it’s worth remembering and mentioning during the next visit to a specialist — bringing the book closer can be a way of coping with something the child cannot name. A rule that’s easy to remember: close doesn’t mean as close as possible. You can find more about the specific parameters of the setup in the entry screen ergonomics and distance.
3. Screen Lower Than the Eyes
This is a setup that is least often considered, as for years we placed monitors on stands.
The top edge of the screen should be at eye level or slightly lower, so that the gaze is directed slightly downward. When we look up, the eyelids open wider and the surface of the eye dries out faster. Additionally, when working with a screen, we blink less than usual — so it’s worth not making it harder for the eye.
With a laptop on a desk, the screen is usually too low for an adult and just right for a child. With a monitor, it can be the opposite.
4. Window to the Side, Not Behind or Directly In Front
Three possible desk positions relative to the window yield three different effects.
A window behind means glare on the screen — the child looks at a surface reflecting light and involuntarily squints.
A window directly in front places the eye before a large difference in brightness: a bright rectangle of the window behind the screen and darker text in the foreground.
A window to the side simply provides light. This setup takes five minutes to adjust and costs nothing.
5. Desk Lamp to the Side, Not Just Above the Notebook
The lamp should be positioned on the side where the child is not writing — for right-handed children on the left, for left-handed children on the right. This way, the hand does not cast a shadow on the notebook.
However, it’s more important that the light comes from the side of the screen, not from behind it or directly onto it. A lamp positioned behind the monitor shines into the eyes, while one placed in front creates glare.
6. Don’t Make the Eye Work in the Dark
Just having a lamp on the desk is not always enough.
The screen should not be the only bright spot in a dark room. Large differences in brightness between the screen and the surroundings increase discomfort during prolonged work, and in the evening, when the child finishes tasks, this situation occurs most often: the overhead light is off, one lamp is on, and the screen is glowing.
Turn on the light in the room, even if the child protests. Diffused lighting, not directed straight at the screen, is better than a strong point source.
7. The Best Desk is One from Which You Can See Far
This point is the most important on the list and often overlooked, as it doesn’t concern the furniture but what can be seen from the place where the child sits.
During learning, the eye maintains one setting at a close distance for a long time. It rests when that setting changes — when it looks further away. Not for a second and not once a day, but regularly, during natural breaks. Looking into the distance is the default state for the visual system, not an exception.
If the desk has a view of a window, a longer hallway, or even just the opposite wall of the room, the child will look further away on their own. If they are facing a wall at arm's length, there’s nothing to look at — and then every break requires a reminder.
Changing the distance of focus is more important than another “don’t sit so close.”
Breaks: What No Furniture Can Set Up
The most well-known is the 20-20-20 rule: every twenty minutes, look at something about six meters away for twenty seconds. In practice, it’s hard to count this, so it’s better to incorporate breaks into the daily rhythm than to watch the clock.
A few things that work at home:
- a break between subjects, not in the middle of a task
- changing the location instead of changing the device — a few steps to the window, a glass of water, a short stretch
- consciously blinking a few times after prolonged reading, gently closing and opening the eyes — why this works is described in the article “Blinking, Mindfulness, and Vision”
- time outdoors during the day, where possible: being outside is associated with looking far and natural light
None of these things are exercises or medical recommendations. They are simply ways to prevent the eye from working for hours on end at one distance.

When Desk Setup Isn’t Enough
A well-organized learning space takes some of the work off the eyes and neck. However, it does not replace eye examinations — we described what such a visit looks like, who conducts it, and what to expect.
It’s worth paying attention if the child:
- consistently brings the book, tablet, or face closer to the screen
- squints when looking into the distance or tilts their head when reading
- complains of headaches at the end of the day, especially after doing homework
- gets lost in the text, skips lines, quickly loses interest in reading
- avoids activities that require distance judgment — ball games, group biking; we wrote about this in the article Your Child Won’t Say “I Can’t See”
None of these signals indicate a vision defect by themselves. Each is, however, a good reason to check how the child sees and how both eyes work together. Children rarely report that they see worse — they have no comparison, as the world has always looked the same to them. And if it turns out that glasses are needed: vision defects are not diseases, and well-fitted correction is a starting point, not a verdict.
